Wolfman Howling Contest: Weekly Contest Results![]() How It Works
"The Wolfman Howling Contest" is a weekly online poll that pits human howlers one against the other to see who has the most authentic wolf's howl. To participate, cast your vote each week for the howl you think is the most wolf-like. At the end of each week, the results will be posted here along with an analysis of the howls from "The Wolfman" himself, Shaun Ellis. At the end of the five weekly contests, the five winners will go head-to-head to determine who's the real leader of the pack. What Makes a Good Howl? Wolves love to howl. Although they do so for a variety of reasons, their primary motives for howling are to strengthen social ties within the pack and to keep neighboring packs at bay. No two howls are exactly alike. A lonesome howl — the most characteristic wolf howl — is a long-distance call to other pack members. Unique to each wolf, the lonesome howl identifies the caller as friend or foe to other wolves in the vicinity. The howl itself is a long, harmonious sound that varies in pitch, from low to high and back again. A wolf pup's howl is similar to an adult's lonesome howl, only shorter and generally higher in pitch. A confrontational howl is an alpha wolf's attempt to scare off an intruder without resorting to violence. This howl is characterized by its coarseness and lowness of pitch. Wolves will also howl in chorus, sometimes to rally the pack for a hunt or often to mask their numbers. This protects against attack from neighboring packs; a single pair of wolves can, for example, sound like a pack of 20 or more. WEEK 1
