Helen was born in Romford Essex, which is where she spent the majority of her younger life. She spent some years in the County of Norfolk in the eastern part of the United Kingdom. A bit of a tomboy, Helen loved the outdoor life and could always be found climbing trees and riding her bicycle around the countryside. At school, she was an avid athlete and took a thorough interest in wildlife.
During her formative years, Helen became interested in the care of young children for whom she always seem to exude a natural empathy. In college, Helen decided to train as a nursery nurse. She attended Clowne Campus, which is part of Chesterfield College in Derbyshire, England. There, she earned her National Nursery Examination Board (NNEB) qualification. Immediately after college, Helen took a job working for Loughborough Social Services Family Centre. During this period of her life, Helen began visits to Devon, England, with family and friends for holidays, and she fell in love with the area. Many holidays and visits later, Helen's love affair with North Devon became ever stronger, and eventually the pull was so magnetic that she decided to live and work permanently in Devon.
Helen found a job in Devon working as a learning support assistant at a local village primary school in Braunton. She settled into her new home in the Combe Martin area within earshot of the wolves at the Combe Martin Wildlife Park. It was the sound of the howling that first drew Helen to visit the park. She became fascinated with the park's research long before she met wolf behavior expert Shaun Ellis.
It wasn't long after Helen's initial visit to the park that she decided to become one of the very valued members of the volunteer support group that help run the Wolfpack Management division. There, she helped Shaun with the day-to-day management of Wolf Management. In addition, she helped Shaun with the daily public talks during the park's open season.
From there, Shaun and Helen fell in love, and as their romantic relationship blossomed, so did Helen's involvement with the daily care of the wolves. Soon after, Helen decided to give up her job at the school and began working full time at the park. Helen and Shaun's rather unusual lifestyle was brought to the attention of Animal Planet, and the network decided to film a series on the couple and their integration with, and impact upon, wolves.
