Frogs Helped by CloroxExplore MoreAmphibians are vanishing at an alarming rate. One-third to one-half of all amphibian species — roughly 6,000 types of frogs, toads, salamanders, newts and caecilians — are in danger of disappearing off the face of the earth in what scientists have called the most significant mass extinction since the death of the dinosaurs.
When an ecosystem becomes unbalanced, frogs and other amphibians are among the first animals to be affected. Conservation biologists consider them "canaries in the coal mine," because when amphibians start to disappear, other species aren't far behind.
Although habitat destruction poses the most serious threat to amphibians, the most immediate cause of their decline is a parasitic fungus called amphibian chytrid. Amphibian chytrid fungus disease, or chytridiomycosis, has so far affected 30% of amphibian species worldwide, causing significant population declines in some areas and extinctions in others.
Originating in Africa, the fungus has spread to western North America, Central America, South America and eastern Australia. So far, it's proven both unstoppable and untreatable in the wild.
Clorox and the Amphibian Ark
In an effort to minimize this environmental crisis, the world's leading conservationists have grouped together to form the Amphibian Ark. The mission of the Amphibian Ark is to rescue the most endangered amphibian species that cannot be saved in the wild. These priority species will be placed in protective custody in dedicated biosecure facilities at zoos, aquariums and other institutions around the world for safekeeping, breeding and ultimate reintroduction to the wild.
In becoming the first official corporate sponsor of the Amphibian Ark and their "2008 Year of the Frog" campaign, which aims to raise public awareness of the Global Amphibian Crisis, The Clorox® Company has joined the frontlines in the fight to save frogs.
