COOL BEAR FACTS
Designed for Digging: The grizzly bear's characteristic shoulder hump is actually a mass of muscles. This muscular hump provides the power the grizzly bear needs to dig up roots, tubers, bulbs and small animals, such as ground squirrels, in spring and fall.
Pushed from the Plains: Grizzly bears were once common on the Great Plains — in fact, they once ranged from California to Ohio and as far south as Mexico — but human encroachment has forced them into rugged mountains and remote forests in the lower 48 states.
