LEMUR KINGDOM Tune InLemur Kingdom tracks the lives of two neighboring gangs of ringtail lemurs in the beautiful protected reserve of Berenty in southeast Madagascar.
The two gangs — the Furies and the Graveyard Gang — may be neighbors but there's no love lost between them. They zealously defend their respective territories. Violent clashes and numerous border infringements generally mean war.
Each gang is ruled by a dominant female. (In ringtail society, the girls outrank the boys.)
The Graveyard Gang is led by Juno. The members of her gang are all related to each other. They are therefore a calm and contented bunch that hang out in their spiky sisal-fenced home, which also happens to be an ancient cemetery.
Their volatile neighbors are the Furies — led by Electra, a paranoid loner. This gang is anything but calm. It's made up of three separate families who all would like to be in charge, so in-fighting is commonplace and nothing stays relaxed for long.
Lemur Kingdom follows both gangs throughout a year, starting in the March mating season, when males like the Furies' dominant male Flash get very hot under the collar, often having to be put firmly in their place by the feisty females.
We follow their progress through to November when newborn lemurs arrive and the rains finally break. Tragedies are encountered, as some characters can't make it through the drought. And we also experience the joy of new life, witnessing the site of tiny babies taking their first breath. We will also show the first-ever recorded ringtail birth.
Friendships are forged as the worst drought in a decade takes hold and low-ranking males like Nimbus and three-legged Peg Leg band together in a heart-warming story in which Nimbus' life is saved.
Lost infants, forest fires and a violent eviction are just some of the stories waiting to unfold on Lemur Kingdom.
