Timothy Treadwell's Legacy

Grizzly People

"Timothy Treadwell loved bears, foxes, and all things wild. He had a wonderful, positive vision for their preservation."

These are the words of Jewel Palovak, a friend of Timothy's and one of the co-founders of Grizzly People — a grassroots organization devoted to continuing Timothy Treadwell's dream of preserving grizzly bears and their wilderness habitat.

The ultimate goal or Grizzly People is to elevate the grizzly bear to the kindred state of the whale and dolphin. They do this through supportive education in the hopes that humans will learn to live in peace with the bear, wilderness and fellow humans.

As listed on their website, the primary goals of Grizzly People are:

  • Putting and end to the poaching of grizzlies in Alaska and the Lower 48 States.
  • The organization of materials for their educational campaign in North America.
  • The development of educational multimedia presentations.
  • The sharing of Grizzly People's photographs with other preservation organizations.

"Timothy believed protecting grizzlies from poaching was an integral part of his mission," says Pavolak.

"For those of us who knew Tim, his work was magical, inspirational, and enlightening. This work can continue through Tim's legacy of film and slides, and though his unique ability to observe and document the lives of grizzly bears."

  COOL GRIZZLY BEAR FACTS

Subordinate Behavior: A subordinate bear behaves in predictable ways. It may move away if it feels particularly threatened, or sit or lie down as a sign of respect. It may remain motionless, looking the other way, perhaps yawning with feigned disinterest. Grazing also indicates that the bear has no ill intentions.

Ready for a Fight: A grizzly that's ready to fight will approach with its ears raised, listening for signals. It may circle its adversary with its head high, then drop it and begin a series of short, open-mouthed lunges, slapping at the ground or surrounding vegetation. When it's ready to charge, it flattens its ears in order to protect them.
