![]() Next ChimpDinka's Story
Dinka is named after the famous Dinka tribe of South Sudan. He was confiscated from bushmeat hunters by the local authorities in the Juba region of South Sudan and brought to a safe house kept by Jane Goodall Institute volunteer Sue Knight.
In April 2007, Eugene flew to Sudan to bring Dinka and four other Sudanese chimps back to Chimp Eden — a mission plagued by bureaucratic and logistical problems. But Dinka arrived at Chimp Eden in good health and good spirits.
After three months in mandatory quarantine together with the other Sudanese infants, Dinka has been released into the infants' enclosure. He's adapting happily to the forest within the enclosure, and learning to get along with the established residents.
Personality
When Eugene first met Dinka, the infant suffered from nightmares, was excessively clingy and would throw huge tantrums — probably as a result of the trauma of having been orphaned very recently by bushmeat hunters. Recently, Dinka's tantrums have subsided and he seems to be growing into a well-balanced chimp.
