About Pennsylvania SPCAThe Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) has operated for more than 140 years and addresses the needs of thousands of homeless animals each year. It was the first humane society in the state and the second in the nation. Based in Philadelphia, its six centers cover more than 46,000 square miles statewide, including inner city, mountain and farm territories. PSCPA’s services include humane law enforcement, adoptions, a full-service animal hospital, dog training programs, the Safe Haven program for pets of deployed military and abused women, and monthly trap, neuter and release surgical clinic for feral cats. The PSPCA Humane Law Enforcement Team, consisting of agents and agent trainees, handle 41,000 animals a year, including cats, dogs, horses, reptiles, snakes, tigers, crocodiles and more. In 2007, the PSPCA conducted more than 7,000 investigations and made 75 arrests. The headquarters animal abuse hotline receives up to 80 calls a day. In addition to cases of animal abuse, the team is dedicated to eradicating dog fighting rings, puppy mills, the abuse of carriage horses, illegal exotic pets, and the abuse of racehorses. |
