The Michigan Humane Society is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to serving animals since 1877 and receives no local, state or federal government funding.

The MHS serves more than 48,000 animals each year and some of their programs include: animal adoptions, animal behavior and training, animal care and protection, charitable animal hospitals, cruelty investigation, education, legislation, lost and found pets, pet visitation, rescue of injured animals, sterilization and wildlife care and shelter.

Field officers are dispatched to over 4,000 distress calls each year, rescuing more than 6,000 animals. Common complaints received include reports of animals with no food, water or shelter.

Mission Statement of the MHS:

"To provide the highest quality service and compassion to the animals entrusted to our care, to measurably reduce companion animal overpopulation and to take a leadership role in promoting humane values for the benefit of all animals."
