The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) was established in 1863, and today represents more than 74,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services. The association's dual mission is to improve animal and human health as well as to advance the science and art of veterinary medicine, including its relationship to public health, biological science and agriculture. Its programs include Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams, which are mobilized to help animals affected by disasters. The association is the profession';s authorized voice for presenting its views to government, academia, agriculture, pet owners, the media and other concerned publics.
