Now that you've decided to show your dog, there are several things you need to do to prepare yourself and your dog before you are ready to compete.
Register Your Dog
The very first step is to register your dog. If you plan on showing your dog at AKC events, your dog must be registered with the AKC. In order for a new puppy to register, both the sire (father) and dam (mother) must be AKC registered, as well as the litter as a whole. The breeder is responsible for registering the new litter and your job is to register your individual puppy. You will need to work with your breeder to complete the AKC registration. They can give you the background information on the puppy's pedigree and help you with the application form. More information about AKC registration.
Begin Obedience Training
Obedience training is vital for any dog, pets and show dogs alike. No one likes a nipper or jumper. A show dog has to be on its best behavior even while it is prodded and poked by the judges and distracted by the roar of the crowds. Start training early — it's a great way to bond with your pet and establish firm boundaries. The judges -- and your dog -- will thank you. Find a breed club that offers training classes.
Take a Handling Class
Would you like to show your dog yourself? Teach yourself the basics of handling, so you can join your pup in the ring. Local breed clubs often offer classes in handling for dog shows. Find a breed club that offers handling classes.
Hire a Handler
Got stage fright? If you'd prefer to have someone else share the limelight with your four-legged friend, hire a handler. Your breeder or local breed club can give you some suggestions. You can also take a look at the AKC Registered Handlers Program.
Find a Groomer
Grooming is an important aspect of competition. Dogs are groomed to highlight the uniqueness of their breeds. A groomer is responsible for the beauty and cleanliness of the whole dog. Grooming includes bathing, clipping, brushing, styling, nail clipping, ear cleaning, teeth brushing and even flea removal! It's not all glamour in this job. Choose a groomer that is familiar with the specific standards for your breed to ensure that your dog meets all the requirements.
Educate Yourself About Dog Shows
One of the best ways to get ready to join the dog show world is to go to dog shows! Talk to people while you are there, including representatives from the breed clubs and other enthusiasts. Observe the action in and out of the ring. You can learn a lot from watching the pros. Find out about the upcoming AKC National Championship on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3 in Long Beach, Calif.
