July 17, 2003 — To protest the most recent "running of the bulls" in Pamplona, Spain, which took place last recently, approximately 12 members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) stripped naked and held signs reading "Stop the Bloody Bullfight" in public.
The individuals had hoped to run with the bulls while naked, but were prevented from doing so by police.
PETA and other animal welfare organizations have been working for some time to bring about an end to the annual event because the bulls are fought and killed in the bullring in Pamplona after the run takes place.

"Please let me know that you will end this bloody activity that should be tossed into the dustbin of antiquated abuses that no longer entertain us," famed actress and animal activist Brigitte Bardot wrote in a recent letter to the mayor of the city.
The bullring is owned by the House of Mercy, a not-for-profit organization that provides shelter for homeless people and does other charitable work. All of the profits are used to fund the organization.
PETA is calling on the House "to extend its mercy to all beings" and the mayor "to replace the running of the bulls with a festive human-only race."
