Stray Dogs Terrorize Disneyland

Aug. 9, 2005 — The Disney company has called in dog-catching experts after packs of wild strays invaded the site of its new theme park in Hong Kong, a company spokeswoman said Sunday.

Government agriculture chiefs and local animal protection groups were aiding the American giant following reports dozens of stray dogs were terrorizing staff at the huge $3.2 billion resort.

"We are seeking the suggestions of various organizations," Disney spokeswoman Esther Wong told AFP. "Stray dogs (are) a territory-wide problem in Hong Kong."

The strays are believed to live in hills and villages surrounding the sprawling park — built in once rolling countryside on an offshore island two miles from the high-rise downtown — and wander in searching for food.

The dogs were befriended by workers during the site's construction, but as the Sept. 12 opening date neared and the builders left the site, they were left to fend for themselves.

Government officials impounded and killed some 45 dogs last month, but dozens have returned, with a report in the Sunday Morning Post claiming the local Disney chief was chased by a snarling pack as he drove onto the site.

The report said other staff members had also been frightened by aggressive packs of strays.

Wong said she knew of no reports of people being chased by dogs but stressed the company was doing all it could to ease the problem.

"Our priority is the safety of our guests and staff and we want to have this matter dealt with as soon as possible," she said.
