Warthog

Warthog picture
Not Your Everyday Pig: With its long, thin legs and a 10- to 20-inch tail, the warthog bears little resemblance to its pig relatives. A dark mane extends from the animal's neck to the middle of its back, and thick protective pads, called warts, appear on both sides of its head. The warthog also has two sets of tusks.

The African Pig: Warthogs grow to be ddd inches tall and can weigh up to 440 pounds. They graze on grasslands and can be found in most of Africa south of the Sahara as well as East Africa. Unlike other pigs, this animal can go without water for several months of the year.

  DID YOU KNOW?

Messy Markings: Warthogs live in groups called sounders and mark their family territory with saliva and urine.

Warty Wallowers: Like their pig relatives, warthogs keep cool by rolling in mud. This helps get rid of parasites while providing relief from the heat of the day.

Common and Desert: There are two species of warthog: the common warthog and the desert warthog.
