Dasyure
Dasyure, or Native Cat, a small mammal of Australia and New Guinea. It is a marsupial, an animal whose young are carried in a pouch on the mother's abdomen. There are five species of dasyures, ranging in length from 18 to 52 inches (46 to 132 cm), and weighing from one to seven pounds (450 g to 3.2 kg). The dasyure has a pointed snout; short, erect ears; and a long tail. It is gray, olive, or dark brown above with light underparts. There are white blotches on the head and body. Dasyures rest in tree hollows during the day; at night they feed on insects and rodents and, occasionally, on domestic chickens. The female bears a litter of four to six young in August.
Dasyures belong to the genus Dasyurus of the family Dasyuridae.
