  • ACANTHAMOEBA KERATITIS
    This disease is caused by an amoeba that feeds on bacteria in the eye. It can lead to blindness and even loss of the eyeball.
     
    AFRICAN SLEEPING SICKNESS
    Also known as Trypanosomiasis, this infection is characterized by extreme fatigue and can lead to death if not treated.
     
    AMEBIC MENINGOENCEPHALITIS
    Caused by the brain-eating amoeba, this rare but very severe brain infection is usually fatal.
     
    ANGIOSTRONGYLIASIS
    Caused by the rat lungworm, this infection can affect the brain and spinal cord, and in severe cases cause meningitis.
     
    BABESIOSIS
    The Babesia parasite destroys red blood cells, often faster than the host can make them.
     
    BAYLISASCARIS INFECTION
    Also called raccoon roundworm infection, this rare disease mainly affects young children who pick up and ingest raccoon feces.
     
    BEDBUG BITES
    Bedbugs bites usually go unnoticed by their victims (sleeping humans). Symptoms include itchy red welts or swelling.
     
    BOTFLY INFECTION
    A botfly infection (where fly larvae grow inside your skin) can manifest as painful pustules that secrete pus and other fluids.
     
    CRYPTOSPORIDIOSIS
    Caused by the Cryptosporidium parasite, this common infection occurs when people ingest water contaminated with feces.
     
    CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS
    Cutaneous leishmaniasis, caused by bites from infected sand flies, can manifest as severe ulcers and leave permanent scars.
  • CYSTICERCOSIS
    Caused by the pork tapeworm, this infection ranges in severity from harmless bumps under the skin to fatal brain swelling.
     
    LYMPHATIC FILARIASIS
    Caused by roundworms living and dying in the lymphatic system, this disease can lead to elephantiasis in extreme cases.
     
    MALARIA
    Classic malaria includes symptoms similar to the common flu, but severe malaria can be life-threatening.
     
    PARAGONIMIASIS
    An infection caused by lung fluke, paragonimiasis can turn severe or deadly if the worms end up in the spinal cord or heart.
     
    SCREWWORM INFECTION
    The voracious screwworm tears at the flesh of its host, enlarging the wound, which could lead to a fatal infection.
     
    SCHISTOSOMIASIS
    Also called snail fever, symptoms include scarring and inflamation of the organs. If the brain is infected, the result can be deadly.
     
    STRONGYLOIDIASIS
    A condition caused by threadworms in the small intestines, this parasitic infection manifests as severe gastrointestinal problems.
     
    TOXOCARIASIS
    Concocted from unwormed puppies and kittens, this disease can either lead to blindness or swelling of the internal organs.
     
    TOXOPLASMOSIS
    Scientists suspect the Toxoplasma parasite of altering human behavior, possibly leading to schizophrenia. It can even cause blindness.
