WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW
Zonotrichia leucophrys

Bird Spotting: This is a large sparrow and colored in beautiful shades of gray, brown and black. Two prominent black stripes bordering a white crown and above the eyes are white eyebrows lined in black.

Habitat: White-crowned sparrows build their nests in dense brush near open grasslands. In the winter these birds can be found in woods and gardens.

Nesting: A nest of bark strips, grass, twigs and hair protect the three to five brown-spotted, pale green eggs laid by the white-crowned sparrow each year.

Bird Bite: This is one of the most researched birds. Much of what we know about bird migration and bird songs has been learned from the white-crowned sparrow.

NEXT BIRD: White-throated sparrow
