Bird Spotting: A medium-sized hawk, the Cooper’s hawk is slate gray above and whitish with fine stripes on its belly. It has a long tail and short rounded wings.

Habitat: Cooper’s hawks are usually found in deciduous forests where trees such as oak, beech, maple, chestnut hickory, elm, basswood, linden, walnut and sweet gum can be found.

Nesting: Four or five dull white eggs, spotted with brown, are laid in a nest of sticks and twigs. Nests are usually located in trees more than 20 feet above the ground.

Bird Bite: Cooper’s hawks feed mainly on birds, which it chases relentlessly through the woods.
