Bird Spotting: This pigeon-sized bird has a gray back and white belly. Its crest hair is shaggy and stands up on end. The daggerlike bill is an excellent weapon for capturing the belted kingfisher’s main source of food – fish.

Habitat: Kingfishers live where fish is plentiful. They can be found along rivers, lakes and saltwater estuaries.

Nesting: Kingfishers nest in tunnels, ranging in length from 1 to 8 feet, built in a dirt or gravel bank near a water source. The tunnel slopes upward to prevent flooding within the nesting site. Kingfishers lay between five and eight white eggs.

Bird Bite: Kingfishers are one of the few bird species where the female is more colorful than the male.
