The Clydesdale horse traces back to Flemish stallions which were imported into the Clyde Valley (Scotland) in the 18th century and were bred to native draught horses. The Clydesdale was bred for agricultural work and their great strength was also used in the coal mining industry, for forestry work and for general draught work in the cities. In the 19th century Clydesdale horses were exported to Australia and New Zealand and in 1877 the Clydesdale Horse Society was formed, with a stud book published the following year. The American Clydesdale Horse Association was formed in 1878.

Broad head with a straight profile, a long thick neck, sloping shoulders, phort back and muscular hindquarters, and feathered legs. Stands with hocks close together.
