Striped Bristletooth Tang
Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department, Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc.

The Striped Bristletooth Tang (C. striatus) is also known as the Lined, Common, and Striated Bristletooth Tang. This fish should not be confused with C. strigosus, known as the Spotted Bristletooth, Kole's Yellow Eye, Kole's, or Yelloweye Surgeonfish.

The Striped Bristletooth Tang has an oval body shape with bold markings that change with maturity. As a juvenile, the Striped Bristletooth Tang has a yellow-gold to tan color combined with striping and spots. When matured, the body color darkens, ranging from blue to burgundy. Depending on what part of the world it is from, it can have either a majority of spots or stripes highlighting the body.

A 75 gallon or larger aquarium is necessary to provide plenty of swimming room. It is aggressive towards other Tangs, therefore, it is best to only keep one per tank. It will not harm sessile invertebrates in the reef tank environment.

The diet of the Striped Bristletooth Tang should consist of frozen herbivore rations, dried marine algae, and vegetarian items such as Spirulina, zucchini, broccoli, leaf lettuce, and dried seaweed.
