Filamented Sand Eel
Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department, Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc.

The Filamented Sand Eel, or Spotted Sand Diver, has a long tubular body with wide, vertical brownish-orange bands and pale, blue dots horizontally down the mid-line. The first three spines of the dorsal fin are elongated, giving the Filamented Sand Eel its name. Use extreme caution when moving this blenny, as the long spines will easily become entangled in netting.

The Filamented Sand Eel requires a reef environment in an 80 gallon or larger peaceful community tank, with plenty of live rock and live sand for hiding and scavenging. This scavenging for food by sifting through sand, makes it a difficult fish to maintain. The diet should include finely cut meaty foods.

Like other eels, they are generally compatible with: Large Angelfish, Boxfish, Groupers, Grunts & Sweetlips, Lionfish & Scorpionfish, Puffers and Tangs & Surgeons.
