Part of a large family of Loricariidae, the Otocinclus is one of the smallest. It is usually tan with a black peppered body. Found in rapidly moving rivers, the Otocinclus swims and moves using its sucker-type mouth.
This catfish should be housed in at least a 30-gallon aquarium, with high filtration along with high aeration. A planted tank with rocks and driftwood will provide plenty of hiding spaces to prevent stress. This unique fish is an ideal candidate for the planted aquarium, as it will consume algae that grows on the leaves of plants.
Breeding in the aquarium is normal for this fish. The female lays her eggs on plants, rocks, and even the glass in aquariums.
A planted tank with high vegetation and some algae will sustain the Otocinclus. However, if algae are not present, supplement with a vegetable-based flake or wafer food.
Ideal tank mates include: Guppies, Mollies, Platies, Swordtails, Angelfish, Discus, Tetras, Barbs, Danios, Rasboras, Gouramis, Rainbowfish, Loaches, Plecos and Scavenger Catfish.
