Thousands of species of tropical freshwater fish are available to the aquarist. Determining which fish to have in a community tank can be daunting. Learn as much about the fish you would like to keep prior to planning your aquarium setup. For each species, the required water conditions such as pH, hardness, temperature, and salinity should be determined. If the potential tank mates are compatible regarding these factors, then find out if the fish are compatible with each other in regard to size, temperament, diet, and tank setup, including lighting, capacity, substrate, and decor (e.g.; plants). Then enjoy designing and enjoying your new aquarium.
