The Featherfin, or Threadfin Rainbow, is one of a few rainbows in which the male has long threads extending from its dorsal and anal fins. The Rainbowfish is known for its characteristic large eyes, black or silver band that runs through the middle scale rows, deeply forked mouth, and two dorsal fins.
This peaceful rainbowfish is a schooling fish that does best in a well planted aquarium. Dark colored gravel may intensify the color of the fish.
An egg layer, the Featherfin Rainbow spawns on large clumps of moss. The parents should be removed from the breeding tank before the eggs hatch, usually after seven or eight days. The fry should be fed very small, live foods.
Although the Featherfin Rainbow has a large mouth, its throat tends to be narrow. With this in mind, foods should not be too large. Iriatherina werneri should be fed an omnivore diet of small live foods and prepared foods.
Ideal tank mates include: Guppies, Platies, Mollies, Swordtails, Tetras, Danios, Rasboras, Loaches, Plecos and Scavenger Catfish of similar size.
