The Bristle-Bushmouth Plecostomus, sometimes referred to as the Medusa Head Plecostomus, comes from the rivers and tributaries of South America. The catfish's main body color is brownish black, with a wide head that tapers to a slender body. The mouth area and nose are covered in short whisker-like appendages, which are used for detecting food. These fish make an unusual addition to any community tank.
Planted tanks with hearty fast-growing plants, high aeration and water movement make for a healthy environment. Rocks and driftwood help to accent a natural habitat and provide hiding spaces to cut down on stress for the Bristle-Bushmouth Plecostomus. A recommended minimum of 30 gallons should be provided to house this fish.
Unfortunately, the breeding habits of the Bristle-Bushmouth Plecostomus are unknown.
Feeding the Bristle-Bushmouth Plecostomus is not difficult due to the fact that it is not picky. Feeding off the bottom of the tank, it gets most of its nutrition from left over food and algae. If there is no algae or left over food present, supplement with high quality flake food, sinking carnivore pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, and tubifex.
Ideal tank mates include: Angelfish, Discus, African Cichlids, South American Cichlids, Tetras, Barbs, Danios, Rasboras, Gouramis, Rainbowfish, Guppies, Platies, Mollies, Swordtails, Loaches, Plecos and Scavenger Catfish.
