The Axelrodi Rainbow, or Lake Tebera Rainbow, is a peaceful, schooling fish that shows its best colors in sunlight. The Rainbowfish is known for its characteristic large eyes, black or silver band that runs through the middle scale rows, deeply forked mouth, and two dorsal fins.
The aquarium for a Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi should have plants in bunches with open water in the middle of the aquarium. A dark colored gravel substrate may intensify the Axelrodi Rainbow's colors.
An egg layer, the Axelrodi Rainbow spawns over moss with the fry hatching after about seven days. The fry should be fed small, live foods such as brine shrimp. Morning sunlight may trigger spawning.
Although Axelrodi Rainbow has a large mouth, its throat tends to be narrow. Small pieces of foods such as prepared flake, frozen, and live foods should be fed.
Ideal tank mates include: Discus, Angelfish, Guppies, Platies, Mollies, Swordtails, Tetras, Gouramis, Barbs, Danios, Rasboras, Loaches, Plecos and Scavenger Catfish of similar size.
