VIRGIN ISLANDS TREE BOA (Epicrates monensis granti)

Description: Boas and pythons are members of a snake family that subdues and kills its prey by squeezing it. Each time its victim exhales, the snake tightens its grip until the victim finally dies. The Virgin Islands tree boa is a brown snake with dark spots that lives in the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and other nearby islands. It is threatened throughout its range by habitat loss and predation by non-native species.

USFWS Status: Endangered
Major Threats: Habitat loss and predation by non-native species
Habitat: Open woodlands on steep slopes and coastal forests
Location: Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and other nearby islands
Diet: Mainly the crested anole, a type of lizard
