KOKAKO (Callaeas cinerea)

Description: The kokako is a wattlebird found only on New Zealand's North Island. Conservation plans are underway to prevent this species from going extinct, including control of predation of its eggs and chicks, and preservation of the podocarp forests that are critical to the kokako's survival. Though at one time there were only a few tiny populations left in the wild, recent surveys show that several dozen different populations now inhabit the North Island.

Major Threat: Predation by non-native species
Habitat: Tropical rain forest
Location: New Zealand's North Island
Diet: Leaves, fern fronds, flowers, fruit and invertebrates
