Dog Behavior
House Training

Even if your adult dog was never house-trained, it's not too late to start. House-training an adult dog takes longer, but, with patience and consistency, it can be done. However, if your dog was previously house-trained and starts to urinate or soil inside, visit the vet; incontinence is a symptom of many diseases and conditions. If the vet pronounces him healthy, consider remedial training, especially if the dog is still a pup.

  • Return to careful supervision.
  • Escort him to the same spot.
  • Enthusiastically praise when he complies.
  • Only crate him when he's alone if you can absolutely rule out separation anxiety.

If there are still mistakes, keep a careful log of when problems occur. Don't become angry or abusive. And don't get rid of the dog without taking him to a behaviorist or trainer who can advise on such problems.
