If flying to your destination, the best place for your cat is in the cabin with you, in range of your scent and comforting voice. Try to book a direct flight during a slow period, such as a weekday evening, to minimize travel time. Be sure to let your travel agent know that you will be taking along a cat. Most airlines limit the number of animals they allow per flight and will charge a fee for a pet to travel in the cabin with you. Ask about specific regulations such as the size of carrier that will fit under an aircraft seat.

If your cat must travel in the plane's cargo hold, check with your vet about sedation and make sure heat and oxygen will be controlled. Since you won't be with your cat, take extra precautions: Be sure the carrier is sturdy, in good condition and rated for air travel. It should be boldly marked "Live Animal" on the top and sides. Line it with soft bedding, topped by disposable diapers. For a long trip with connections, fasten a bag of dry food to the top of the carrier, along with written instructions for feeding and watering.
