If your first instinct is to adopt a kitten rather than an adult cat, you aren't alone. Kittens are cute, playful and just about as appealing as you can get. But a kitten's seemingly limitless energy is not something you can turn off when you've had enough. Because everything is new and fascinating to them, kittens get into more mischief than adults. Their tiny needle-like claws can do some serious damage when they climb the curtains or scale your leg to join you up on your chair. And a very young kitten, like any baby, requires a lot of attention and mothering and may be prone to health problems.

One of the reasons people prefer kittens to adult cats is that they fear an older cat may already have some bad habits; they think they will be able to "train" a kitten as if it were a dog. The truth is that the majority of excited, unruly kittens are not very receptive to any type of behavior modification, much less actual obedience training. An adult cat may, in fact, be more receptive to patient correction of bad habits than a frisky kitten.
