A Timid Stray

Animal lover Paul Carithers, a telephone technician with BellSouth who carries dog bones and cat food for just such emergencies, tries to befriend a stray dog with tags in Baton Rouge, La., on Sept. 7, 2005. The unidentified dog is one of thousands of family pets left behind, lost or killed by Hurricane Katrina, the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. Just when Carithers made a move to grab the dog's collar, the frightened animal ran away.
