"Generous" Felines
Dr. Anne Hale pets one of the resident blood donor cats at Midwest Animal Blood Services in Stockbridge, Mich., on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005. Hale, who's been in touch with veterinary medical assistance teams deployed to Louisiana and Mississippi, said Tuesday that many canines and felines survived the hurricane's initial blow, but that they need blood to recover from heatstroke and serious injuries. The Stockbridge blood center — one of 13 animal blood banks across the country — has shipped 25 units, a third of its weekly production, to Louisiana State University's veterinary school. The school is caring for evacuated pets from the New Orleans area.
