What Dolphins Have to Say

Here are two recordings of a pod of killer whales — the largest members of the dolphin family — and some sounds of a bottlenose dolphin.

Listen to killer whales
This is a small pod of killer whales that may include a calf or two. The clicking sounds you hear are echolocation — the animals are sending out signals to see what's around them. Echolocation begins with a series of clicks that accelerates into almost a buzz. Killer whales will also use grunts, burps and squiggles, which serve as "conversation."

Listen to dolphins
You are hearing the sounds of a bottlenose dolphin carrying on a "conversation" of squeaks and whistles. When several of these dolphins get together it's not unlike being in the middle of a meeting hall during a family reunion. Everyone is talking. These whistles and squeaks are typical dolphin exchanges.
