OWL: The owl hunts at night, relying on its senses to find its prey in almost total darkness. Its widely-spaced eyes are the most forward-facing of any bird, giving it excellent stereoscopic vision — the ability to gauge distance. Its large eyes are designed for picking up dim light. They're shaped like tubes, which makes for a large cornea. This allows more light to enter the eyes. Its iris can close to a pinpoint during the day or fill the eye completely at night to allow in more light. It has a large retina with lots of rods, which are sensitive to light. Because its eyes are so large and tubular, the owl cannot move them in its sockets. Thus, its neck has evolved to rotate 270 degrees. In addition to powerful eyesight, the owl also has exceptional hearing.

Nominees: Cheetah | Dolphin | Dragonfly | Eagle | Owl
