Join
Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom for a thrilling journey to seek out the planet's most isolated venomous sea snake: the Niue sea krait. This mysterious creature, also known as the katuali, has rarely been captured on film and to this day remains virtually unknown to the outside world.
This black-and-white banded snake is only found in the waters surrounding the small Pacific island of Niue, east of Tonga. Unlike "true" sea snakes, which always remain in the water, sea kraits spend part of their life on land, resting, digesting and laying their eggs. But it remains unknown how and when the ancestor of this land-dependent creature first reached the remote shores of Niue's ancient atoll.
In
Sea of Snakes, Dr. Bryan Fry, a toxicologist and internationally respected venom researcher from Australia, takes an up-close look at this little known reptile. He uncovers its habits and incredible behavior for the first time ever, and sets out to milk its lethal venom while revealing the island's age-old legends.
His dangerous mission takes him deep into Niue's blue wonderland: the pristine marine habitat of crystal clear waters, coral reefs, bubble caves and undersea mountains teeming with tropical fish, dolphins, turtles and sharks. These secret underwater gardens have never before been featured in a documentary.
