If you missed our Survival of the Sand Creatures Live Chat With Peter Gros, wildlife expert and former co-host of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, we've got the transcript of all the answers to your sand creature questions right here.
Animal Kingdom: Welcome to our live chat and thank you for joining us after Animal Planet's Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom special Survival of the Sand Creatures.
Do you want to know more about the amazing survival skills of the desert creatures featured in the show? Well, Peter Gros, our guest wildlife expert and former co-host of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, is here to give you the answers.
Peter Gros: I'm happy that you could join us, and hopefully you have several large bottles of water on the side as we discuss the desert.
Kellie: Where is the Namib Desert?
Peter Gros: The Namib Desert is an unusual desert ranging from the top of South Africa roughly 1,200 miles north through Namibia to the Angola border, and inland 60 to 80 miles. In some places, it connects with Etosha and the Great Kalahari Desert.
Carly: What other animals live in the Namib besides the ones featured in this program?
Peter Gros: Well, oddly enough, there are many large hoof stock, such as giraffes, zebras and many forms of antelope, as well as crocodiles, black rhinos and many other animals one wouldn't expect to find in such an arid climate. I had the opportunity while camped in the Kalahari to have desert elephants walk through our camp in the middle of the night and all you could hear was a faint swishing, like a light breeze blowing through the camp. Imagine 8,000-pound animals moving so silently through the night on their way to the desert looking for water and food. When we woke up the next morning, we had large elephant footprints all around our campsite. It was quite a surprise!
