OTTER CONSERVATION

Animal Planet: Are giant otters under threat? And if so, why and what’s being done to protect them?

Carolina Vargas: The giant otter is an endangered animal. Pelt hunting in the past almost led this species to extinction. So nowadays, habitat destruction and competition with fishermen for fish present the largest threats to this otter. What we are trying to do is learn more about these animals, protect the areas where they live and, using environmental education, involve local people in their conservation.
