Polar Bear Alcatraz

type size: [A] [A] [A]

Wrangel Island is home to the highest density of polar bears in the world. Located in the Russian Far East, this 2,800-square-mile stretch of rocky, barren terrain is a major breeding ground for polar bears, as well as their favorite prey: seals.

For most of the year, Wrangel Island is encased in ice, allowing the bears to wander for thousands of miles in pursuit of prey. However, in summer, the pack ice retreats and this breeding destination becomes a polar bear prison. Trapped with hardly anything to eat, the bears and their cubs must endure nearly two months of almost total starvation as they wait for the pack ice to return.

In this Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom special, wildlife filmmaker Arne Naevra and polar bear expert Nikita Ovsyanikov maroon themselves on Wrangel Island with the bears in order to experience this amazing feat of endurance for themselves.

As food supplies on the island dwindle, the pair finds themselves embroiled in the story of an orphaned polar bear cub. The cub's struggle for survival becomes the struggle of an entire population, but this touching film closes with an offering of hope for the planet's largest land predator.
