A shrub shivers in the breeze. Another shrub trembles nearby, then a third. Velvet ears shift behind the brambles, and a small creature sidles out of the shadows. Cape hares, a warren of them, feed quietly in the dark, their paws racing to pluck tiny orbs of fruit from the low bushes. A sudden calm causes one of them to sit upright, its long ears on the alert. A shadow fragments the light of the moon overhead. In a sudden rush of air, giant wings swoop out of the sky, talons outstretched, and the body of a cape hare vanishes beneath a great owl. Rising into the night, the carnivore leaves behind a scattered scene of hopping animals, which dash for shallow scrapes beneath the bushes.
