Spotted Hyena

Wet crunching and the pressing drone of insects pollute the air. A quivering leg reaches importunately for the heavens, the remains of an impala shaking beneath it. An enormous female hyena feeds noisily from the open animal, triggering loud pops with her bone-crushing jaws. The noise and powerful stench of blood attracts a visitor: a sloping male. He sneaks cautiously toward the carcass, but the snarling female drives him away in a fit of laughter. At a distance, he sends out a loud whoop. He waits, impatiently lowing. No response. He tries again, a staccato of whoops, and is again ignored by his clan. Exacerbated, the female charges, driving the cackling intruder off her turf, and away from her kill.
