Aardvark

Strange tubes emerge from a rising bank to survey the landscape. Angling and pausing, they search through a veil of insect sounds, but find little else. A long proboscis with a pig's nose at the end appears next, followed by the preposterous body of an aardvark. The ancient creature hesitates, listening carefully for signs of danger. Only insects. Even so, it lingers beside its burrow for some time. Finally satisfied, it leaps powerfully away from its lair and bounds along the shore of a quiet pond. Then, it stops, raises up on its abbreviated legs and hearkens once more. Still just insects. A few jumps farther and the aardvark breaks into a leisurely trot, entering the night to feed.
