Spring Hare

A heavy breeze sweeps through an army of grasses, flattening their blades like fallen soldiers. Foraging among the ranks: tiny creatures with long, naked ears and peculiar gaits. Spring hares, a horde of them, busy themselves with herbs among the slender plants. In turns, they flatten to the ground to gnaw at the leaves with plank-like incisors. They bob up and down, keeping a collective vigil. Several stop feeding. Standing at attention, their raised ears and black, shining eyes probe the darkness. Suddenly all of them scatter, furiously hopping ahead of feline eyes, which come tearing out of the blackness. One by one, the rodents disappear down narrow burrows, and an unfortunate cat is left without a kill.
