A bird-like cry rings out in a battlefield of aardvark holes, attracting a pair of tufted ears. Sailing quickly through the grasses, the ears close in on the sound of distress. The high blades part, revealing a caracal under tow. Her almond eyes flash as she navigates her way to the calling aardvark hole. Suddenly, she halts. Her body stiffens, responding to something unseen. Quickly dashing for the hollow, she rouses three caracal kittens from the ground. The mother hurries her young into the night, and the cats vanish. Moments pass, and four dark shapes materialize out of the darkness. Jackals, lured by the calling kittens. The scent of caracal is still strong, but an easy meal won't be had tonight.
