The Asiatic lion is one of the rarest big cats on the planet. Once common throughout West Asia, where it ranged from northern Greece to central India, this regal cat was nearly wiped out by the beginning of the 20th century. In 1907, less than 100 remained. But thanks to the actions of a benevolent viceroy, the Asiatic lion was saved and has been making a steady comeback ever since.
