The Ancestral Grizzly
It was customary among many tribes of the Pacific Northwest to tell the grizzly origin story when erecting a totem pole, especially if the grizzly was one of the figures represented. Grizzlies were often carved at the bottom, providing strength to the totem and helping to anchor it into the ground. One common design, as seen on this Wakhia totem pole, featured long fangs, oversized nostrils and small, round eyes.
