The Situation in Kruger
Kruger National Park is a world-famous, 7,523-sqare-mile game reserve located in the northeast corner of South Africa. The largest park in South Africa, it's home to over 500 species of birds, nearly 150 species of mammals, 120 reptile species, over 50 types of fish and 35 amphibian species.

African buffalo, elephants, Nile crocodiles, hippopotamus, lions, hyenas, wildebeest, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and antelope are just some of the Kruger's many and varied animal species. Of all these, elephants cause the biggest problems for the park.

A single adult elephant devours up to 660 pounds of vegetation a day. Their enormous appetites extract a heavy toll on vegetation as well as other animal species.

Kruger National Park can ideally sustain a maximum of 8,000 elephants before other species are negatively affected, according to estimates.
