Researcher Anne Orlando placed GPS radio collars on nine elephants during her mission to Mali. The doctoral student is in the process of collecting the data from the collars that were retrieved in April 2002 and hopes to gain a better understanding of how these animals survive their desert habitat. Her findings will be used to help the Mali government conserve the country's population of about 322 elephants.
