who gets the dog?
They Got the Dog

Tucker (aka Django), Tim, Tyler, Nicki and Jay
small text
large text
Tucker has settled nicely into the utopian estate of "Metaphoria," where he lives with his four roommates. He also has a new name, Django, which is more in tune with the musical interests of his new friends. See what his roommate Tim had to say about Tucker's new life.

The First Day
The first day home from taping Who Gets the Dog? was a very exciting day (actually evening) for all of us. As soon as we got home, we introduced Tucker to our fourth roommate, Jay, who had been unable to be present. After we all spent some time together, Nicki and I decided to go to PetSmart to buy some toys, treats, etc., to make Tucker feel more at home. When we got back, we played with the new toys for a while. Before long, however, all of us were tired from the long day and ended up going to bed. The first full day after the show we took Tucker on a hike into Los Padres National Forest. He loved it.

Home Fit for a Pooch
We bought Tucker a nice doggie bed, a rope toy, various squeaky balls, a "hurl a squirrel," lots of treats (both real sausage treats and dental bones), plus lots of food (both canned and dry, which we mix to feed him a more balanced diet). Also, I gave him an airline blanket that he loves to play with.

It's a Family Affair
Tucker, while possibly not our house leader, has certainly established himself as the center of attention in our "family." He is a very independent dog, but over time he has come to be comfortable with all of us. As for what we like to do with Tucker, nearly any outdoor activity — going hiking, going to the beach or even just walking downtown Ventura's streets — is made better by including him.

Pet Personality
As I said, he is a very independent dog. But he is also capable of being extremely attentive in a one-on-one situation. I have curled up with him on the couch for hours, and then watched him run like a madman around our yard. Overall, he is just a joy of a pet.

Getting to Know You
The biggest adjustment for us has been making sure we give him enough attention. We now come home early and have rearranged our schedules to make them more compatible with his needs. His biggest adjustment has been learning to live in a completely new place. Our house and yard are likely much different from the urban confines of Los Angeles.

Making Friends
Tucker has a new friend. We adopted a cat recently, and they are getting along nicely. Her name is Lyra. At first it was a bit tense — a few barks and a whole lot of hisses — but they've started making inroads. We're hoping they will be good friends.

Favorite Pooch Pastime
He loves to chase scents (mostly of raccoons and squirrels) around our yard. There is so much to smell that he could amuse himself for hours.

Paws and Sit
Tucker has learned to sit, lie down, sit pretty, shake, give high fives and come (most of the time). I especially want to teach him to look both ways before crossing a road, although I'm not sure that is possible.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Dog Park
One of the most amusing things that has happened with "Tucker" took place during a recent storm. The mountains near our house were covered in snow, so we thought what better thing to do than introduce Tucker to the snow. Well, he absolutely loved it. The husky in him couldn't have been happier. We all slid down the hills, and Tucker bounded through the snow. Needless to say, it was a good time.

No One's Perfect
His only real behavioral quirk is that he's very driven by food. We have been gradually breaking this need down, mostly by feeding him the right amounts but he is a dog and was a stray, so food is a very important thing in his mind. He is getting better at it, though.

Changes
The only major change in Tucker since he came to live with us is that he's no longer called Tucker; we renamed him "Django" after the great jazz guitarist Django Rheinhardt. Django has responded very positively to this renaming, as he didn't seem to like his old name very much.
